Verenovo Awarded $300K from Wood Innovations Grant by USDA Forest Service

May 16, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 16, 2024

North Wilkesboro, NC: Verenovo, a pioneering biochar manufacturing company, is proud to announce its receipt of the Wood Innovations Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service for $300,000. This significant funding, part of a national effort to support sustainable wood energy and product innovations, will further Verenovo’s mission to revolutionize soil health and foster economic growth in rural communities.

Verenovo applied for the grant with a proposal to establish an innovative biochar production facility in North Wilkesboro, NC. The project aims to transform waste biomass from local sawmills into biochar while generating renewable power for self-sufficiency at the production facilities. This initiative addresses the surplus waste from regional paper-mill downturns and supports sustainable forest management by valorizing byproducts.

The funding from the USDA will enable Verenovo to process thousands of tons of feedstock annually into biochar. This venture is expected to create 15-20 direct and 30-40 indirect jobs per site, significantly contributing to economic development in historically underserved areas. The job opportunities will also provide valuable new skillsets for those looking to contribute to the green economy by learning to operate state-of-the-art technologies and processes.

“Receiving the Wood Innovations Grant is a testament to Verenovo’s commitment to sustainable, practical solutions and innovation in the wood products sector,” said Brewer Logan, CEO of Verenovo. “With this support, we will expand our operations and continue to develop eco-friendly solutions that benefit both our local communities and the environment, increasing our resilience.”

The grant will also support Verenovo’s ongoing partnerships with leading educational institutions like NC State and Appalachian State Universities, enhancing collaborative research efforts and the development of new sustainable products.
Verenovo’s project was strongly supported by multiple stakeholders, including the National Forest Service, the Department of Sustainable Technology at Appalachian State University, NC Cooperative Extension of NC State, and several others. These endorsements underscore the wide-reaching impact and support for Verenovo’s innovative approach to environmental management and community engagement.

The Wood Innovations Grant Program, launched in 2015 to stimulate and expand wood product and wood energy markets, is part of the USDA’s broader strategy to transform America’s food system, promote resilient local and regional food production, and make historic investments in rural America’s infrastructure and clean energy capabilities.
